man and boy是固定用法，意思是for the whole of one's life。按Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English标注属于旧式用法，年轻人已不用。凡是固定用法都是习惯形成的，不能随意变动。例如to rain cats and dogs意为to rain heavily，就不能随意改作dogs and cats。这是没有什么理由可说的。
